KUCHING: Local companies have been told to go into filmmaking, especially films that can help youths navigate life positively.

Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts (MTCP) Minister  Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said these efforts are in line with the objectives of his ministries, including the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Entrepreneur Development, to foster the growth of the creative industry and support entrepreneurs.

“I support any company that wants to make a film about life in Sarawak. Now I leave it to all parties to seize the opportunities provided by the government,” he said during the charity fund raising film premiere of ‘Kumang – Aku Ukai 17 Agi’ at the  Golden Screen Cinemas, The Spring here yesterday (July 13).

Karim said the Iban film serves as an inspiring example for young people, demonstrating that they can overcome challenging obstacles to achieve success.

“I want our youths to learn from this film,” he added.

The film premiere was organised as part of a charity fundraising initiative by the Sarawak Scout Council.

Produced entirely by a local production company and directed by Alaric Soh, it portrays an Iban girl struggling with her life’s journey in pursuit of education, love, and dreams.

The executive producer of the film obtained the rights to screen the film for free, aiming to encourage other producers and directors to follow their lead and support noble causes.

Also present at the film premiere was Chief Commissioner of Sarawak Scouts Captain Zainuddin Tan Sri Datuk Amar Hamdan Sirat.
