KUCHING: Members of the public are urged to purchase meals online using services such as Food Panda or Grab Food and cash on delivery (COD) rather than going out to buy the meal at eateries in order to stop the spread of Covid-19 virus.

Education, Science and Technological Research Assistant Minister Dr Annuar Rapaee said he was saddened at seeing huge crowds lining up at a McDonald’s outlet in Sibu to get the BTS (K-pop Group) meal, causing congestion despite the fact that the country was in a pandemic.

“I received a report yesterday (May 26) about the congestion at a McDonald’s outlet in Sibu where people were lining up to get the BTS K-pop Group meal which upsets me.”

“I appeal for the public’s full cooperation in purchasing their meals through online services or COD because we are in a pandemic and we should avoid going to crowded places as this could be detrimental not only to ourselves but to others around us.”

He conveyed his sympathy for the frontline workers who are working relentlessly to combat the Covid-19 pandemic.

“I received thousands of text messages from frontline workers who are really upset after hearing about the viral news because they (frontline workers) often did not even have time to eat because of the pandemic.” Dr Annuar said.

He also raised concern about the number of beds in Sibu Hospital, which he feared would be insufficient in no time.

“I hope the general people will be mindful of their actions, as this will have an impact on the hospital.

“For the time being, we still have a few beds available, but if this type of situation occurs again, I am afraid that there will be insufficient beds in the near future.”

He stated that he also consulted with the hospital and Covid-19 quarantine and treatment centres (PKRC) on how to deal with the increasing numbers of Covid-19 cases.

“A lot of people urged for the implementation of MCO but while we are awaiting the decision of whether there will be MCO or not we have to remember that everyone has his/her own role in battling this pandemic.”

“There is no need for us to wait for the MCO to be considerate, and lastly I hope this type of situation with the congestion at McDonald does not recur.
