KUCHING: The Sarawak State Library launched the second edition of its “Sarawak Children’s Festival” at its premises here today.

The two-day event, which ends Sunday, was officiated by the Sarawak State Library chairman, Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr Hamid Bugo.

There are about 40 booths manned by non-governmental organisations (NGOs), clubs, education institutions and government agencies at the festival.

Bugo described the event as a learning platform filled with a variety of activities including talks, seminars and workshops which were exciting for parents and children.

“Recently, there’s an increase in Pustaka membership. Nowadays, the library is not limited to just reading materials but also as a place of research and recreational purposes,” he told a press conference.

He added the facilities available aimed to cultivate a reading culture and promote a community centre for the public in terms of a healthy lifestyle or educational pursuit.

“I believe what we have here is special for the community. The library here is vibrant. The surrounding here is filled with flora and fauna,” he added.

Meanwhile, a mother of two, Emma, said she knew about the programme through social media but she didn’t expect it to be so crowded.

“I usually bring my kids here during the weekends as I like the surroundings here. I believe the event today is a good platform for children.

“Other than learning, my children can mingle with other children here,” she said.

She was surprised the event also introduced traditional and contemporary games to the children.

Bai Ley, a father of two, looked forward an exciting day with his family.

“There are a lot of fun activities going on here. While having a great time, my children also have a chance to learn,” he added.

Meanwhile, a fishing competition organised by the State Library will be on Sunday from 8am to noon.
