KUCHING: Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii Lee Wuen has expressed his appreciation for the government’s decision to revise the pay of civil servants, marking the first adjustment in 12 years.

Yii said it is important to recognise the crucial role played by civil servants in effectively implementing government policies.

“The revision is a long-overdue gesture of appreciation towards our civil service, their efficiency and productivity are vital for the successful execution of initiatives and this adjustment aims to enhance their morale and performance,” he said at a press conference after attending the Jualan Agro Madani programme here today (May 4).

He also mentioned the government’s commitment to implementing robust monitoring systems to ensure accountability and address any instances of misconduct or underperformance within the civil service.

Beyond the immediate impact on civil servants, he noted the broader economic implications of the pay revision.

“With more disposable income, civil servants will contribute to the circulation of money within the local economy, this boost in spending will benefit businesses, leading to a potential ripple effect of economic growth,” he explained.

In relation to ongoing endeavours to tackle the cost of living, he underscored the necessity for implementing both short-term, mid-term and long-term strategies through the Jualan Agro Madani programme.

“While we’re laying the groundwork for more sustainable policies, immediate measures are essential to alleviate the burden on the people,” he said.

He also disclosed the details of initiatives in Bandar Kuching aimed at directly assisting constituents, such as subsidising essential items worth RM30 like vegetables, fish, chicken and rice only at the price of RM10.

“These short-term interventions are part of our continuous efforts to address the pressing concerns of our community,” he added.
