Dr Tiong Chong Ying says a few factors are causing the low registration for the jab.

TATAU: The percentage of people who have registered for the Covid-19 vaccination is still low due to several factors, says Dr Tiong Chong Ying, a family physician at Tatau Health Clinic.

She said one of the factors was that some senior citizens aged 80 to 90 thought that they did not need to be vaccinated as they only stayed at home.

“However, this group is at risk because their children and grandchildren work outside and return to the longhouse, especially during the holidays and weekends,” she said today.

The second factor, she said, was that pregnant mothers were concerned and fearful to receive the vaccine. She assured that they need not worry as these vaccines were safe, adding that pregnant mothers would only be vaccinated at the gestational age of 14 to 33 weeks.

“If infected with Covid-19, this group is at high risk to the point that they would need to be treated at intensive care units or hospitals. The benefits of the vaccine are much higher compared to the risks.”

As for those with a history of food or medical allergies, Dr Tiong said this group would receive their vaccines at hospitals, but pointed out the risk was low based on studies conducted.

“Those with illnesses or factors such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity, diabetes, cancer, kidney problems, heart disease, and chronic lung problems as well as senior citizens aged 60 and above are encouraged to register for the vaccination.

“I would like to remind everyone that the Covid-19 vaccine is safe and effective in curbing the transmission of Covid-19.”

She said those who had registered should wait for their appointment to receive the vaccine, adding that they should attend according to the appointed date, time and location in order to reduce wastage of vaccines.

“Make sure you bring your identity card, telephone and your clinic card if you have one. This would let the health worker know of any diseases and medications you are taking.”

Dr Tiong said pregnant mothers should bring their pink card to inform of the gestational age.
