MIRI: Fitness enthusiasts in the city and fans of Personal Electric Vehicle (PEV) activities, including those who travel from Bintulu, literally threw themselves into the inaugural car free day on Saturday.
Miri Mayor Adam Yii Siew Sang said it was part of efforts to promote a healthy lifestyle among Mirians and reduce carbon monoxide emission.
“The Miri Car Free Day is one of the initiatives of Miri City Council (MCC) under the implementation of the Strategic Plan under 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP), as well as in conjunction with the development and implementation of the MCC Low Carbon City Framework.
“It was also to encourage locals to walk, jog or cycle around on what would otherwise be a busy stretch,” said Yii, who is also the Pujut assemblyman.
He said this when speaking on behalf of Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah to officiate at Miri Car Free Day 2022 yesterday.
Miri Resident Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusuf also lauded the effort and commended the support given by members of the public.
“This is the first time such a programme was held in Miri.
“However, it is not something new and has even become a common activity held in some foreign countries such as Europe and other Asian countries such as Indonesia besides the closest one in Kuching,” he said.
The programme was a collaboration between Miri Division Resident’s Office and MCC with the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (UKAS), Sarawak Tourism Board, Masterpiece Cycling Club, Transformer Fitness Bootcamp and Greatfitness Studio.
During the event, fitness and exercise activities by Transformer Fitness Bootcamp (FTB) were held jointly with Greatfitness Studio.
There were also PEV-related sports, decorated bicycle competition and lucky draw.
