MIRI: The strong community spirit of gotong-royong, particularly in Orang Ulu longhouses, should still be maintained not just among the current generation but future ones as well, said Telang Usan assemblyman Dennis Ngau.

“This has been the foundation that longhouse villagers have based themselves on and keeps them progressing, despite the difficulties faced in managing village affairs,” he said.

He said this at a “Gotong Royong Perdana 2020” programme organised by Persatuan Penduduk Masyarakat Long Atip Telang Usan at Long Atip on Saturday.

“I am happy to see that many youth have joined their longhouses’ work party as this could be an opportunity for them to learn from the village elders,” he said.

He added that gotong-royong is also an excellent way to maintain connections among villagers as the rural community is not spared from the massive rural-urban migration in the pursuit of good education and job opportunities.

Dennis also reminded the longhouse villagers to not to be ignorant of the benefit of working with their community through events or programmes.

“Not only will you feel good about yourself, but you can also meet members of the community and build up your network,” he said.
