Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud

“I am thankful and proud that Sarawakians have remained united and calm in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic and the uncertainty of the world’s economy.

“This is the strength that we have and must defend. The trust of Sarawakians in the programmes and efforts of the federal and state governments in tackling the pandemic is significant and prepares our state to move into the endemic phase,” said Head of State Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud.

He said this in his opening address at the 19th Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting here today

Taib added that the reopening of economic sectors and social activities as well as the implementation of various high-impact development projects would certainly revive the economy affected by the pandemic.

On politics, he said Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) had shown and adopted a mature political atmosphere and put the state’s harmony and stability as its main agenda.

“Although the 12th Sarawak Election was held during a difficult period, our people have managed to fulfil their responsibilities.

“I believe our people have made the right choice because they chose a strong government and also always put the interests of the people in every action.”

Taib also congratulated Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and GPS on a comprehensive victory in the state election, winning 76 out of 82 seats contested.

“I believe the Premier’s leadership and the confidence of the people in the GPS administrative machinery led to such a huge victory.

“Congratulations also to all the honorable members who have succeeded in winning their respective state seats.

“I am confident that the Premier and his administrative machinery will continue to lead Sarawak to a higher level.”
