Most facial scrubs or exfoliation creams contain microplastics, little beads that help remove the top layer of dead cells on your skin.

But microplastics are terrible for the environment, which is why you should avoid buying cosmetic products that contain them. Instead, it’s fairly easy to make these kinds of exfoliation creams yourself.

One easy homemade exfoliant is sugar scrub, which you can use on your body. Just mix a packet of organic vanilla sugar with lemon juice from one lemon. Then add brown sugar, until you have a thick cream.

Another alternative can be to mix a thick dairy product like cream cheese with two to three tablespoons of honey and at least three tablespoons of sugar. Again, this should leave you with a homogenous thick cream, that you can use straight away to scrub off dead skin cells. – dpa
