KUCHING: The Sarawak Esports Association has welcomed the RM30 million allocation in the Budget 2024 to position Malaysia as a key player in the esports industry.

Its president Afiq Fadhli Narawi said that a strategy that is both inclusive and aligned with the association’s principles and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is essential for the effective use of these funds and for promoting a long-lasting environment for game development and esports.

One of his suggestions was to support local talent. He proposed using part of the funds for scholarships, mentorship, and training, aligning with SDG 4, which focuses on quality education.

Furthermore, investing in local gaming hubs and esports arenas would not only provide spaces for competitions but also community centres for enthusiasts, giving them a sense of belonging and unity.

“Next is to fuel innovation. We ought to dedicate funds to fuel innovation in the gaming and esports sector. This will keep us at the forefront of technology and aligns with SDG 9, ensuring that we remain a leading global player,” he said.

Collaboration is another focus area. Afiq encouraged partnerships between international and local entities, and incentives to retain local talent.

Engaging with educational institutions will help instill a love for esports and game development among young people, reflecting SDG 3’s emphasis on well-being and SDG 17’s call for partnerships.

“This is to ensure that every ringgit is used for the betterment of our industry. This builds trust and faith among our people,” he said.
