JULAU: A local man, who accidentally shot himself with a homemade shotgun (bakakok), was arrested following his release from Sarikei Hospital on Monday (Jan 29).

Julau police chief DSP Andam Sulin said that the incident occurred at the 31-year-old’s residence in Pakan around 2.30 pm on January 16.

“The shooting resulted in severe injuries to his left thigh and a fractured hip bone.

“He was promptly referred to Sarikei Hospital for immediate medical attention,” he said in a statement.

Acting on information, a team from the Julau Criminal Investigation Division (CID) conducted a search at the suspect’s house. During the operation, the team confiscated a bakakok shotgun, a black iron pipe fashioned as a rifle barrel, and other materials, including bullet casings believed to have been used during the shooting incident.

Andam added that the case is being investigated under Section 8(a) of the Arms Act 1960 for possession of weapons or ammunition without a valid license or permit.

If convicted, the suspect could face up to seven years in prison, a fine of up to RM10,000, or both.
