Man fined RM2,000 for stealing cables

KUCHING: The Magistrates’ Court here today sentenced a local man to a fine of RM2,000 or five months in prison for stealing cables in front of a secondary school at Jalan McDougall last August.

Nor Ikmal, 23, pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 379 of the Penal Code, which was read before Magistrate Syarifah Fatimah Azura Wan Ali.

According to the charge, he was accused of stealing Telekom Malaysia cables in front of a secondary school on Jalan McDougall, at around 8 am on August 31.

Upon conviction, the offence carries a penalty of imprisonment for up to seven years, a fine, or both.

Based on the case’s facts, the complainant and his colleague, who served as security guards at the school, noticed a man stealing cables in front of the school.

The accused was successfully apprehended by the complainant, and the stolen items, including a sedan car, a woodcutting machine engine, and the stolen cables, were handed over to the police for further action.

The investigation confirmed that the accused had stolen Telekom Malaysia’s cable wires.

The prosecution of the case was handled by Inspector Merylene Lindan Andrew Mang, while the accused was not represented by a lawyer.
