PADAWAN: A jobless man’s ruse to avoid paying off a RM450 debt by lodging a false police report landed him in deeper trouble when he was arrested.

Padawan OCPD Supt Abang Zainal Abidin Abang Ahmad said the 20-year-old was arrested at Batu Kawa police station around 1pm yesterday.

The suspect had lodged a police report at 11.07 am claiming that he had been robbed of his belongings by three men near the junction to Kampung Sagah Singgai, Matang on Monday night.

“In the report, the suspect stated that his bag containing an identity card, RM285 cash and his friend’s phone, was snatched by the robbers.

“Following the report, Insp Nyaum and Padawan D9 members interrogated the suspect around 1 pm and found that the report was false as the suspect wanted to avoid settling his friend’s debt,” he said.

The suspect will be investigate under Section 182 of the Penal Code for providing false information.

If convicted, he can be sentenced to jail for a term of up to six months, or a maximum fine of RM2,000, or both.

Investigation found that in February, the suspect had borrowed RM450 from his friend and promised to pay in instalments of RM250 in early March and RM200 in mid-March.

However, Abang Zainal said in the beginning of March, the suspect could only pay back RM165 and when his friend began pressing for more, the suspect started coming up with various reasons to avoid paying off his debt.

The suspect therefore lodged a police report claiming that he was robbed, hoping that his friend would give him another chance and more time to repay the debt.

“The suspect was also afraid that his friend would confront his parents,” Abang Zainal said.
