MIRI: A man lost RM2,500 to a scam after making a loan that did not exist on social media platform.

In a police statement, Miri OCPD ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said the 42-year-old man applied for a loan through Facebook on May 1 at 11.51 am.

“At that time, the victim was at his home at Pelabuhan Klang, Selangor. The victim entered a link to a certain bank.

“After he clicked on the link, he was contacted by a number through Whatsapp and received a message that his application for loan had been approved.

“The victim was told to make three transactions. The first transaction was made in Miri from a relative’s bank account,” said Alexson.

He added that the victim was told to pay R500 to a certain account to get approval.

After that, the elderly man was told to make another transaction to pay RM2,000 to another bank account, said Alexson.

The victim lodged a police report after he did not receive any loans and realised that he had been scammed.
