Mandatory death penalty likely for woman, male friend

MIRI: Five women including an Indonesian were among eight persons arrested in drug raids at two separate locations here on Saturday evening.

Seized were 213.19g of syabu and 31 Erimin 5 pills weighing 9.77g worth a total sum of RM25,965.

Two of the eight suspects arrested – a woman and her male friend aged 46 and 32 respectively – are being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 which carries the mandatory death penalty for those convicted.

Both suspects were detained in a room at a homestay in Miri and police seized from them five packets of syabu (190g) and eight Erimin 5 pills weighing 2.5g.

According to Sarawak Narcotics Crime Investigation Department chief Supt Sahar Abdul Latif, the first suspect – a 39-year-old man – was detained by the police at around 6.30pm on Saturday at a five-foot way in the city centre.

“Our team discovered syabu weighing 22.49g and 23 of Erimin 5 pills during a body search on him,” said Sahar.

During the raids, police also confiscated a BMW 320i worth RM45,000 and a Yamaha R25 motorcycle worth RM20,000.

Other suspects are being investigated under Section 39A and Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
