KUCHING: The celebration of World Suicide Prevention Day 2022 with the theme “Act Now, Build Hope” was held at Auditorium, Pustaka Negeri Sarawak, Miri.

This programme aims to increase the public’s confidence to play an important role in preventing suicide incidents and removing the stigma related to suicidal behaviour.

Held yesterday from 8.00am to 5.00pm, the event was
organised by the Miri Divisional Health Office in collaboration with Pustaka Negeri Sarawak, Miri.

This programme was also broadcast via FB Live Pustaka Negeri Sarawak.

Its objectives were promoting the importance of each individual’s role in suicide prevention, spread awareness and eliminate the stigma of suicidal behaviour, identify signs of suicidal behaviour.

The programme started with a lecture slot from Sharen Uyong Jeffery and Nur Asyiqin Abdullah, Sarawak State Library, Miri titled ‘Library Introduction and Sarawak State Government Initiatives’.

Opening ceremony of World Suicide Prevention Day 2022 at the Miri Division level was graced by Dr Wong Khung Ying, Miri Divisional Epidemiological officer representing the Divisional Health Officer and accompanied by Razak Rambili, regional manager, Sarawak State Library, Miri; Dr Francis Heng Eng Khai, deputy director of Miri Hospital represented the director of Miri Hospital; Dr Bawih Inu Pu’un, president of the Miri Mental Health Association and Dr Wong Yong Kai, Epidemiology medical officer (NCD/PKA), Miri Divisional Health Office.

Apart from that, the suicide prevention talk slot titled “Suicide Prevention: Break the Silence” was presented by Felicia Cosmas, Psychology Counselling Officer, Miri City Health Clinic.

A total of 87 people participated in this programme for the morning session.

In addition, exhibitions related to suicide prevention by Miri Divisional Health Office, Miri Mental Health Association and Sarawak State Library, Miri also took place.

Among other interesting activities were the Worry Bin, Hope In A Message, mental health screening and a question and answer session with the Psychologist Counselling.
