Matang cafe brawl: Two face attempted murder charge

KUCHING: Two friends were charged in the Sessions Court here Wednesday (Feb 21) with attempting to murder a 36-year-old man at a café in Matang last August.

Mohd Khaizorie Wasli, 29, and Suhaimi Jamani, 28, pleaded not guilty to the charge under Section 307 of the Penal Code read together with Section 34 of the same code.

They were jointly accused of causing injuries to the 36-year-old victim with a sharp weapon capable of causing death.

They were accused of committing the offence in front of a café at Jalan Matang, at around 2:19 am, on Aug 21 last year.

If found guilty, they could face imprisonment of up to 20 years.

The court allowed both men to be released on bail of RM8,000 each with a local surety and fixed March 22 for re-mention.

The prosecution was conducted by Deputy Public Prosecutor Norshafatihah Nor Azmi while both accused were not represented by a lawyer.

On Sept 5, 2023, another friend of the accused named Mohammad Aiman Yusri, 20, was sentenced to seven years in prison after pleading guilty to the same charge.

On Aug 21, last year a video went viral on social media showing a brawl at a café in Matang when the victim was attacked by five armed men with a machete and a hockey stick.

It is believed to have stemmed over a dispute concerning a debt.
