KUCHING: The Kuching South City Council (MBKS) will be sending a formal letter to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to block phone numbers displayed on illegal moneylender posters, banners and fishtails.

Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng said, aside from the council’s effort to remove the fishtails, posters and banners around the city, they will also write a letter to MCMC and the police regarding this issue.

“If possible, we want to request MCMC to block all the numbers that appear on these illegal banners and posters.

“We have been taking them down and they (illegal moneylenders) continue to put them up. We are trying to see what is the best way we can do – the normal way is to take it down,” he said after leading an operation to take down the illegal moneylender banners around the city on Monday (Oct 2).

In view of this, MBKS has been encouraging the community to work together and remove these illegal banners to protect the image and cleanliness of Kuching city.

“We understand that it is the council’s duty to handle this issue. However, we appeal for public cooperation because we want everyone to feel a sense of belonging to this city,” he said.

Wee shared that his KPI to his enforcement team is 1,000 posters and banners taken down per month and for the past few months, the KPI reached is close to 1,000.

“People said that the council can call them (and tell them not to put up the banners) but at the end of the day, who will be the one to enforce this (rule)?

“If we find them, what do we have to do – jail them or what?” he asked.

He added that MBKS will continue to do their job and hoped that they will be able to reduce all these illegal posters and banners around the city.
