KUCHING: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has taken note of the malfunctioned communications tower at Kampung Semawa, Pantu which was never repaired despite complaints from nearby residents.

In its press statement here today, the commission’s spokesperson said the tower was a construction project under the state government.

“The construction of the tower which is located 4.5km from Pantu is already completed and is on the commercial discussion stage with telcos such as Celcom, Digi, Maxis and U Mobile to provide 4G lines to the tower,” he said.

He added that MCMC is carrying out works to ease discussion among telco companies and the Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation (SDEC), which is responsible to carry out the project paid by the Sarawak government.

“The telecommunications tower is targeted to operate with 4G service before the end of this year.

“As an interim step, the SDEC is carrying out fixing works of the Wi-Fi service equipment under the Sarawak Rural Broadband Network (MySRBN) at the tower for the communities in Kampung Semawa, Pantu, Sarawak,” he added.

MCMC said the Wi-Fi facilities are expected to be completed before the end of March this year.

“Under the JENDELA Phase 1 initiatives, a total of 10 new telecommunications towers are being constructed in Sri Aman. These towers are expected to be completed and operational in the fourth quarter of 2023,” he added.
