THE Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has been urged to address the issue of internet connectivity and network coverage in Sarawak.

Federal Minister of Communications and Digital Fahmi Fadzil said the ministry will study the issue on infrastructure, including ‘naked’ towers without any satellite dishes.

“As made known to me, there are more than 600 naked towers operated by Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation (SDEC) in Sarawak, but only less than half of these currently are attached to MNOs (mobile network operators) or operating telcos.

“Furthermore, half of the towers are operating in areas with 4G coverage, which means some areas still do not get good network coverage,” he said when met by reporters at the State Legislative Assembly today.

At the same time, he said his ministry will urge MCMC, MNOs and telco companies to provide guidance to improve coverage.
