KANOWIT: Plans are underway to address the longstanding issue of limited parking availability in the town centre.
Machan assemblyman Allan Siden Gramong said the parking issue is not new to the town, especially with the completion of the Sibu-Kapit road link, which has increased the number of visitors to Kanowit.
“Kanowit is a small town, and we did not expect that the development brought by the completion of the road link (Sibu-Kapit passing through Kanowit) would draw so many people to the town almost every day.
“We have plans to build a parking space; however, it is still in the planning stage,” he said to reporters after officiating at the opening of Pesta Kanowit at Kanowit Waterfront here Saturday (Sept 23).
On the Pesta Kanowit, Allan was delighted with the overwhelming response from the public and also with the participation of individuals from nearby towns and cities.
“I was informed that not only residents of Kanowit but also people from Kuching, Sibu, Miri, Bintulu, and even Brunei have come to participate in this Pesta Kanowit,” he noted.
Allan emphasised that Pesta Kanowit is an annual event that not only contributes to the local economy but also serves as a platform for families to gather and spend time together.
He also expressed his satisfaction with the completion of the Kanowit waterfront in April this year, at a total cost of RM5.3 million, providing a suitable venue for Pesta Kanowit, with the highlight being the Kanowit Powerboat Race.

“I would like to extend my gratitude to all the parties that contributed to this Pesta Kanowit, including the District Office, Kanowit District Council (KDC), and others, particularly our elected representatives, Ngemah Assemblyman Anyi Jana, and Unity Minister Datuk Aron Ago Dagang,” he added.
Others activities organised in conjunction with the event are funfair and trade fair from Sept 10 to Oct 1 at Emma Fort Square, Rahmah Sale and Agency Exhibition (Sept 20 to 24), Battle of The Band (Sept 28) Kanowit Remote Control Boat, Community Sports, Strong Man contest, Traditional Dress Queen 2023 (all on Sept 30)
The programmes for the Festival 2023 start in earnest on Sept 16 with a Native Song Singing Competition from 9am and 6pm at the Main Stage, Fort Emma.
