KUCHING: The Ministry of Utility and Telecommunication is planning to venture into 3D utility mapping which allows for visualisation of pipeline depths beneath the ground.
Its minister Datuk Julaihi Narawi said currently, every water supply authority operates its own Geographic Information System (GIS).
“We are actively working towards the integration of GIS mapping across all Water Supply Authorities to create a unified water supply GIS map.
“Having this extensive mapping available would prove immensely beneficial for both water supply development planning and operational activities,” he said.
Julaihi said this in his speech entitled ‘Transforming Utilities and Telecommunication: A Journey of Innovation and Connectivity’ during the 27th World Congress on Innovation and Technology| 6th International Digital Economy Conference Sarawak (WCIT|IDECS 2023) at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching, here yesterday.
He added that Sarawak is proactively exploring innovative strategies to evolve into a data-centric water supply service.
“Our plan involves deploying fully automated water treatment plants, leveraging Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems and internet of things (IoT)
Technology.
“This setup will empower the system to autonomously oversee operations, requiring minimal human intervention for plant management,” said Julaihi.
He said the Ministry recognizes the challenges in terms of water supply, therefore leveraging on smart technologies to address these challenges.
