KUALA LUMPUR: The Ministry of Communications and Multimedia (MOCM) by way of Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM) is setting up a free sports channel in high definition.

Minister Gobind Singh Deo said the effort is to help promote and develop the sports industry while fostering unity and instilling the spirit of patriotism.

Apart from that, he said prestigious sporting events would also be aired with RTM having obtained the broadcasting rights of the Asian Basketball League (ABL), Cub Prix, All England tournament, Malaysia Axiata Open and BWF World Championship as well as Copa America.

“Regional sporting events like the 2019 Manila SEA Games will be covered apart from Moto GP and Martial Arts On Championship,” he said at the 73rd anniversary celebration of RTM and the launch of the station’s news trial channel at Angkasapuri here today.

Gobind said for 2020, he hoped the UEFA football league competition would also be aired.
