KUCHING: Upgrading works for the pavement and replacement of a new aerobridge at Bay 3 of the Miri Airport is underway with the aim to enhance safety and efficiency.

Sarawak Transport minister, Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin said the project was funded by the Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad’s (MAHB).

“As you can see today, the aerobridge at Bay 3 is the original one 39 years ago and it is still being used, even though the pavement is cracking and not suitable for aircraft to park.

“Therefore, there is a need for upgrading and the estimated cost for the aerobridge replacement is RM2 million while the pavement rehabilitation is RM1.4 million.

“The completion date for the pavement is scheduled by Nov 26 this year and upon completion, it will be followed by the installation of the new aerobridge,” he said.

Lee stated this during a press conference after visiting the Miri Airport’s aerobridge project yesterday.

Earlier, he also revealed that the existing aerobridge at Bay 4 of Miri Airport would be replaced.

“So, hopefully, by early 2025, we will have these new aerobridges ready,” he said.

He added the project is progressing slightly ahead of schedule, with the pavement rehabilitation currently about 30 percent completed.
