Mitsubishi Corporation scholarships for 5 UTS students

SIBU: Five undergraduate students from University of Technology Sarawak (UTS) were awarded with the Mitsubishi Corporation (MC) Scholarship Programme yesterday.

The MC Scholarship programme is a scholarship provided by the MC that aims to provide financial support to the selected students from the B40 family.

Those recipients were Dennis Phiong Wei Sheng, Lee Kuok Jing, Denis Siaw Jia Kuan, Elaine Wong Bao Yi and Lee Hui Ling.
They were selected based on their academic results and extracurricular activities. Each recipient received a total of RM6,500.

The scholarships were presented by the MC’s chief executive in Malaysia Masashi Shiraishi cum general manager, KL Branch and witnessed by the UTS’s vice chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Khairuddin Ab. Hamid, at the UTS’s campus here yesterday afternoon.

Speaking at the presentation ceremony, Khairuddin pointed out the UTS’s vision is to be become a globally recognised technical university.

As a Sarawak State University, he said, UTS strives to make it known and recognised for its high quality and standard that are respected and recognised internationally.

“Therefore, in the next few years we will embark on various internationalisation strategies and activities, such as establishing academic and research collaboration with overseas partner universities, international student mobility programme, visiting foreign professors, organising international conferences and partnering with international industry players.

“As such, I would like to take this opportunity to thank MC for choosing UTS among the other universities in Malaysia and offering the MC International Scholarship for the Year 2022 to five of the UTS undergraduate students.

According to him, MC is the first international industry player that provides scholarship to UTS students.

He said MC is currently the largest Japanese trading and investment company, with operations in every industry in the world such as energy, metals, machinery, chemicals, finance, food, and consumer goods.

Since 2000, he said MC has been providing scholarships to outstanding university students in financial needs who enrolled in various universities outside of Japan.

“We are very fortunate and grateful that MC is offering the scholarship to deserving and qualified students. It is very timely and meaningful to reduce the students’ financial burden and help them to focus more time on their studies.

“UTS has submitted in MC International Scholarship 2023 application, and we do hope MC will continue to support our needy students again this year,” Khairuddin added.

Meanwhile, Masashi who also spoke said with an unwavering commitment to the corporate principles, MC remains fully dedicated to growing its business while contributing to a prosperous society.

Holding onto such commitment, he said MC’s ongoing Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) projects in Sarawak include the sponsorship of forest re-generation, Japanese Film Festival, Youth Communication Camp, Girls Camp and the scholarship for university students.

According to him, the objective of MC International Scholarship is to foster human resources who are expected to contribute to the development of their home countries and the global society in the future.

Last year, he said MC offered the scholarship to 508 students from 56 universities in developing countries, and five selected students from UTS were among them.

“We hope these five UTS students would contribute in enhancing the future economic and social development in Sarawak,” Masashi added.
