MMC stresses food sanitation and hygiene

MIRI: In order to live up to the tag, ‘Miri – The most liveable Resort City’ vision, the Miri City Council is all out to drive home the importance of food sanitation and hygiene among food operators and cleanliness of their premises.

Mayor Adam Yii Siew Sang appealed to food business operators to sanitise eating utensils in hot water before serving their customers.

“The containers used to hold hot water should be made of metal or porcelain; plastic container is not allowed for the purpose,” he said in a statement yesterday (Mar 28).

He encouraged the use of biodegradable paper food containers, stressing that MCC had banned the use of Styrofoam containers for packing food.

The ban has been in effect since August 25, 2017.

On high fat food consumption, Yii said the increasing number of coffee shops, restaurants and eateries resorting to deep-frying methods was of concern to the community and health authorities.

“To increase awareness about the effects of high fat food intake and the method of food preparation by operators, MCC is enforcing one of the licensing conditions, which is cooking oil shall not be recycled and should be disposed of through a licensed recycling company.

“Proof of proper disposal should be produced to council for verification,” he said.
