SIBU: The Department of Veterinary Services (DVS) Sarawak is bringing its mobile anti-rabies vaccination programme for dogs to Sibu Jaya on July 29.

According to Penghulu Wong Chiu Uo, the next rabies vaccination programme will be held at Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Cina (SJKC) Tian Hua.

“The programme will start from 9.30 am to 2.30 pm. I hope the public will come and vaccinate their dog,” he said when met by reporters at the rabies vaccination programme at SJK Taman Rejang here today (July 1).

SJK Taman Rejang rabies vaccination programmes are co-organised by DVS with the JKKK of Jalan Meritam, Taman Rejang, Jalan Diong Kik, and Jalan Merdeka.

Kapitan Ling Hua Wee said the programme is essential not to only vaccinate the dog but also to create awareness among the surrounding residents to keep their dogs at home.

“Do not let their dog out from their house compound. It is endangering the road user the public and themselves because you never know which dog got this rabies.

“I believe (through the programme) you can get a lot of input from DVS, council, and the Ministry of Health. (Several cases recorded where) the dog owner himself was bitten by the dog. We have to be very careful,” he said.

Meanwhile, Kapitan Tiang Nie Ping said that almost 20 dogs roamed around the Jalan Diong Kik area.

“Not that this dog does not have an owner but they let their dog outside. We kept on calling the Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) to catch them but when the council came, the dog disappeared.

“So, we keep asking the resident to cooperate. We need everybody’s help. It is not a new issue. We are very aware of this issue. We only can urge them for their safety and all the people nearby. Please keep your dog at home, don’t leave it out,” he urged.

Also present were Kapitan So Teck Kee, Kapitan Song Ik Biu, Kapitan Kong Leh En, Kapitan Nee Nga Leh and others.
