MIRI: Additional flights will be proposed during festive seasons like Hari Raya Aidilfitri and Gawai Dayak, on top of the Chinese New Year celebration.

State Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin said he has had talks with top managements of various airlines to introduce extra flights for the festive season.

“Since end of last year and the beginning of January this year, I have personally met the top managements of Malaysian Aviation Group, AirAsia, Firefly, Royal Brunei Airlines, Batik Air and MASWings to launch extra flights from and to West Malaysia, Sabah, Bandar Seri Begawan and within Sarawak.

“All of them have agreed to increase flights or upgauge their flights using wide-body aircraft for extra seat capacity. I wish to thank them for their kind cooperation,” Lee said in his speech during the Chinese New Year Dinner organised by SUPP Miri-Sibuti Parliamentary Liaison Committee at a hotel here on Monday (Feb 12).

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg was present to officiate at the event.

On transportation development in Miri, Lee thanked the Premier for approving the Miri Lorry Terminal Project which is currently in the design stage, the tender of which is expected to be called by the second quarter of this year.

“This will help to resolve the lorry parking problem in Miri, especially those lorries that are on transit to Brunei, Limbang, Lawas and Sabah,” he said.

On public buses, particularly long-distance buses, Lee said the Miri Bus Central Project has just been completed.

He said that during the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) Sitting in November last year, the Premier had approved RM5 million for the new smart bus programme for Miri this year.
