SARIKEI: The Road Transport Department (JPJ) has issued a total of 12,779 summonses for various offenses involving road users in the state.

State director Mohd Syafiq Anas Abdullah said the summonses were issued during an integrated agency operation from January to July.

According to him, the operations carried out in collaboration with the police and National Anti-Drug Agency (Nada), is an effort to ensure that issues, especially those related to roads, can be addressed in an integrated manner.

“If it were not for the movement control order (MCO), we would have implemented it once every two weeks with all relevant agencies.

“The purpose is to ensure that road laws and issues related to road safety are complied with by the public,” he told reporters after attending the JPJ Sarikei integrated operation with the police and Nada at Simpang Bulat on Monday.

He added that from Aug 1 to 23, JPJ Sarawak collected revenue of RM163,824.10 while JPJ Sarikei branch received RM8,760 after 70 percent deduction on summonses.

Throughout the month of August, the department will be offering a reduction rate of 70 percent on all compoundable summonses.

However, Mohd Syafiq said the privilege was exempted for overloading cases exceeding 30 percent and road tax that did not have insurance coverage.

“The discount offered during this independence month celebration is part of our social responsibility to the community.  The government is very concerned and caring about the financial burden of consumers who were detected for committing offenses on the road.

“In this regard, we also open payment counters on weekends until a set period later. However, on weekends, payments must be made by debit card only,” he told.

The integrated operation was attended by nine personnel from JPJ Sarikei, six police officers and six members of Nada Sarikei.

Throughout the operation period, JPJ Sarikei detected six offense notices including failing to place the ‘P’ sticker and failing to show vehicle licenses and road tax, while the police have identified three traffic offenses.
