KUCHING: The federal government’s move to establish the village community management council (MPKK) is a violation of Article (3), Sarawak Community Chiefs and Headmen Ordinance 2004, said Sarawak Patriots Association (SPA) chairman Datuk John Lau.

He added that since Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said the federal government would rule the country based on the rule of law, they must rule based on the rule of law and also follow the law.

“The move to establish the MPKK is one of the many examples where the federal government does not follow the law,” Lau said in a statement yesterday.

Lau commended the federal government for advocating freedom of speech under Article 10 (1a) of the Federal Constitution.

“We also thank the federal government for amending the unfriendly laws,” he added while urging federal government to allow the formation of Native Court of Equity so that conflicting issues can be better addressed, amicably determined and resolved.

“At the end of the day, good fences make good partnerships,” Lau said.
