KUCHING: Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS) is aiming for a green Samarahan and wishes to plant beautiful trees and flowers along the Kuching-Samarahan expressway from Batang Kuab Bridge to Intan and Batang Samarahan Bridge.

This is only possible if funds are available, its chairman Datuk Peter Minos said.

Once the Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) project is completed and the traffic lights have been set up to replace the roundabouts, MPKS will meet and work closely with the Public Works Department (JKR) and Sarawak Metro on the greening and beautification project.

“People coming from Kuching must be impressed and feel happy when entering Kota Samarahan through the Batang Kuab Bridge.

“Greening Samarahan is a show of MPKS’ respect for the fight against global warming. The very least we can do is to plant trees and flowers all over that help in increasing oxygen that we breathe and suppressing bad carbon dioxide that degrades many things,” he said in a statement.

Minos thanked Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg who had hinted of providing support for MPKS’ waste-to-energy (WTE) system during his visit to Norway and also at functions organised by Parti Pesaka Bumiputera (PBB) and Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP).

He explained that WTE is the modern way of treating and managing solid waste by incinerator as opposed to the use of traditional dumpsite or open landfill.

Minos said MPKS is actively seeking and working to go for the WTE system and the incinerator method where energy is produced and generated and useful products can be obtained from waste.

“As in Norway, Singapore and many other countries, the incinerator application is done in respect and concern for public health and the environment. That is the basic objective and the bottom line,” he added.
