SIBU: The Malaysian Red Crescent Society (MRCS) Sibu Branch has marked 60 years of unwavering humanitarian service to the community, said Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian.

Reflecting on the branch’s six-decade journey which he said was similar to Sarawak’s Independence, he stressed the significance of the branch’s establishment which had to overcome numerous challenges to achieve its present standing.

“Thanks to 60 years of glorious humanitarian service to the people in Sibu. Without you, Sibu would not be so blessed. I want to thank each and every one of you who had contributed to this success.

“The next 60 years will depend on you (the young generation),” he said in his speech at the MRCS Sibu 60th anniversary celebration at a leading hotel here last night (Nov 19).

Dr Sim, who is also the Minister for Public Health, Housing, and Local Government, commended the current generation of MRCS Sibu volunteers for embracing a spirit of volunteerism.

“You should be proud to join the Red Crescent Society as it is an inspirational organisation, well-known and respected throughout the world,” he added.

Meanwhile, MRCS Sibu chairman Penghulu Chua Hiong Kee highlighted the branch’s independence and neutrality as a humanitarian organisation.

“Established in 1963 by the late chartered chairman, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr Wong Soon Kai, among others, the branch is part of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and is incorporated under the MRCS (Incorporation) Act 1965.

“For the past 60 years, we upheld the spirit of humanity, fraternity, and volunteer services because of our unwavering devotion. Our branch has gained significant recognition and is highly regarded,” Chua added.

Expressing joy at the impact of their collective efforts on the local community, Chua noted the emergence of a new generation of volunteers and expressed confidence in the continued growth of volunteerism.

Looking back, he lauded the branch’s collaborative approach, forging strong partnerships with local NGOs, enterprises, and government departments to address challenges and serve the community effectively.
