SAN FRANCISCO: Elon Musk’s company Neuralink, which wants to connect the brain to a computer using neural implants, has raised another US$280 million from investors, reported German news agency (dpa).

The fresh funding round was led by technology investor Peter Thiel’s venture capitalist Founders Fund, Neuralink said in a social media post on Monday.

The company’s planned device will be connected directly to the human brain with fine electrodes. Neuralink is initially researching medical applications.

The first goal is for people who cannot move to operate a computer through their thoughts. Later, the hope is to restore sight and speech with the help of technology. Billionaire Musk is also talking about a future in which people expand their abilities by connecting to a computer.

Neuralink received approval for clinical trials on humans in the US this year. Other companies and researchers are also working on similar technologies. – BERNAMA-dpa
