SIBU: Loan financing from the Housing Development Corporation (HDC), an initiative of the Sarawak government, has made it easier for the Iban community to build a new longhouse.

Nangka assemblyman, Dr Annuar Rapaee revealed that one of the longhouses that benefited from the programme was Rh Kawau in his constituency.

“Each family or pintu (doors, or household units of a longhouse) in Rh Kawau is given a loan RM30,000 respectively with no interest. This is the initiative by the Sarawak government through HDC,” he said in his Facebook posting on Sunday (June 12).

Dr Annuar expressed his gratitude to the state government for the help and support given to 26 families in Rh Kawau.

“Earlier, I also promised that for the ‘ruai’ we will use Rural Transformation Project (RTP) funds to add to the allocation.

“In total, RM780,000 in loans were given to Rh Kawau to build their longhouse with a total of 26 pintu.

“This loan will be repaid over twenty years. This means they only pay RM100 a month for 20 years without interest from the Sarawak state government,” he said.

Meanwhile, Tuai Rumah Kawau also expressed his gratitude to the Sarawak government for the initiative.

“At first it was quite hard for me to apply for this loan. However, with Dr Annuar’s help, our application has been approved.
