SIBU: The construction of a new road in Sibu will mitigate congestion along Jalan Wong King Huo, said Bukit Assek Assemblyman Joseph Chieng Jin Ek.

Scheduled for implementation under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) in 2026, the road aims to alleviate traffic woes in the area.

He said the proposed route will span from Hanns Residence (Wong King Huo Road) to Sibu Airport Road (Tunku Abdul Rahman Road), traversing through Bukit Lima Forest Park and intersecting the traffic light junction near Sibu Hospital before linking to Maling Road.

Chieng disclosed this in his speech at the Sibu media night held last night (Jan 29). It was attended by 48 media representatives.

Chieng noted that the Sarawak government, under the 12th Malaysia Plan, had approved the design and land acquisition process for the new road.

Meanwhile, on the gas cylinder shortage affecting Sibu residents, Chieng urged PetrosNiaga not to impose a purchase quota for buying gas cylinders.

Dismayed over instances where senior citizens were restricted from buying multiple cylinders despite returning several for exchange, Chieng stressed the essential nature of gas cylinders for households.

“It is very disappointing when senior citizens are prevented from buying two gas cylinders even though they have brought two or three gas cylinders to exchange.

“Gas cylinders are very necessary for families. I understand currently there is a shortage of gas cylinders, but when the supply is sufficient later on, I hope PetrosNiaga will withdraw the quota,” he said.

Chieng said Sibu gets a supply of 4,200 gas cylinders daily starting from Jan 29, which also includes for other areas such as Mukah, Kapit, and Sarikei.
