KUCHING: The newly-established Pertubuhan Kesedaran Intelektual Kuching Sarawak (Pakis) is determined to provide assistance in improving the lot of the poor and poverty-stricken through welfare educational programme.

Its chairman Abang Ismawi Abg Madi said the association has made several pertinent points on the role of education, welfare and economy to help in lifting the underprivileged group.

“First, we recognise that education is pivotal to ensure sustainability for future generation. We hope that we could encourage and provide incentives and collaborations in facilitating educational programme for the community especially the underprivileged,” he said when met at a Hari Raya open house in Laila Taib Welfare Complex here yesterday.

He also stressed that the association will remain non-partisan and will focus on pioneering long-term welfare programme which benefits those in need.

“Secondly, economic welfare is our priority in enhancing the community’s living conditions. The programme must benefit the community and should emphasise on uplifting the conditions of relative poverty, poor people and those in absolute poverty,” he explained.

On economic growth, Abang Ismawi said that they were planning to hold educational outreach programmes to raise awareness among children who come from the bottom 40 per cent income (B40) group.

“We will make ways for the poor to better themselves and improve their livelihood through education and skill training programmes with direct assistance and guidance,” he noted.

With 22 members, the association is now officially registered and approved by the state’s Registrar of Societies which focuses on social empowerment via civic and social education.

“Those who have the passion to drive community’s growth in Sarawak are encouraged to contact and join us regardless of educational background,” he added.
