KUCHING: Sarawak Forestr y Corporation (SFC) yesterday announced the target of 100 adopters for the orangutan named ‘Mas’ had been achieved within one month of the adoption campaign launched on September 16, 2017 at Semenggoh Wildlife Centre (SWC) where a birthday party was thrown for Mas. To date, SFC has recorded a total of 102 adopters from 16 countries, namely, the UK, the USA, Australia, Singapore, China, Spain, Germany, Netherlands, Indonesia, Denmark, Poland, Bangladesh, Czech Republic, Switzerland, Scotland and Malaysia. Adopters receive a limited edition ‘Mas T-shirt’ and an adoption certificate each.

The proceeds from the programme will be used to fund conservation activities and rehabilitation of wildlife, especially orangutans. Members of the public can still adopt an orangutan for one year by contributing RM200, while companies can sponsor their own great apes for RM10,000 a year.

There are 28 orangutans, aged between one and 46, at SWC. Mas was named after the three-letter abbreviation for Malaysia, as she is believed to have been born on September 16, Malaysia Day, last year. Other than for orangutans, SFC also runs sea turtle and other wildlife adoption programmes. For more information, follow and like its facebook page @ sarawakforestry.
