39 collared for illegal gambling

A suspect is caught selling illegal lottery tickets during the statewide raids by the police.

KUCHING: Following the arrest of 41 individuals in a statewide operation against illegal gambling from 13 to 19 March, the State police had intensified their operations against the menace in the state and detained 39 people last week.

State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) chief, SAC Dev Kumar Sree Shunmugam said that for the past one week (from 20 – 26 March) a total of 25 raids were carried out by the police against all forms of illegal gambling activities in the state.

He said twenty of the raids were on illegal 4D and the CID headquarters team carried out 14 raids while the Padawan District CID team carried out 3 raids.

“The district CID teams in Kuching, Miri, Bintulu, Sarikei, Serian, Marudi, Lubok Antu and Limbang also carried out a raid each,” he added.

Dev Kumar said the remaining five cases in Lawas, Limbang, Marudi and Serian towns involved cyber gambling where a total of 40 computers, tablets, video machines and 13 machines used for gambling  activities were seized.

“The raids against illegal 4D resulted in 29 people arrested and cash amounting to RM10,174,  mobile phones, portable printers, calculators, betting slips and others were seized.

“As for the raid against cyber gambling, 10 people were arrested and cash amounting to RM3,440 were seized,” he said, adding that 11 of the raids were conducted at public places, eight at shoplots, three at grocery shops and three at coffee shops.

Dev Kumar said the suspects, aged between 17 and 40 years old, were being investigated for offences under the Common Gaming House Act, 1953.

“In order to rid this state of illegal gambling activities, we will continue to conduct raids,” he added.
