KUCHING: A hailstorm hit Kuching City and parts of Kota Samarahan yesterday at around 5pm. The phenomenon was witnessed by driver, Syelliza Abang Basri, who was dr iving from Kota Samarahan to her home in Kuching.

According to her, there was a sudden strong wind and heavy rain, followed by lumps of ice hitting her windscreen.

“I immediately stopped at the side of the road and recorded a video,” she said when contacted yesterday. Meanwhile, Joshua, who resided at Stutong Commercial Centre, said that the hailstorm occurred when he was in the shower.

“It was raining heavily and I could hear what sounded like rocks hitting the roof. I looked out of the window and saw that the compound was covered with ice balls,” he said.

Kertini Ballerina, a Desktop Publishing Artist (DTP), was driving from Kota Samarahan to her office in Kuching when she found herself in the middle of a hailstorm near Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS). “At first, I thought it was just a normal rain.

The ice balls which landed on my car sounded like rocks. I was shocked. I tried to find a place to park, but I couldn’t, so I continued driving towards Kuching. The hailstorm only ended when I reached Samajaya Industrial Estate at Muara Tabuan,” she said.

Videos of the unusual phenomenon went viral online, thanks to netizens. The last hailstorm in Malaysia occurred in the Klang Valley, Selangor in 2016.
