KUCHING: The Sarawak government will follow Putrajaya’s decision to deploy the Malaysian Armed Forces to assist the police during the two-week movement control order (MCO) period.

Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said while the police in the state will continue to monitor the situation, the army’s deployment will be of great help.

“Since the MCO on March 18 till yesterday, there has been an improvement on those complying with the order, (but we certainly want everyone to toe the line),” he said in a press conference via live stream at Wisma Bapa Malaysia yesterday.

Uggah, who is also the State Disaster Management Committee chairman, noted that families should put off plans to return to their villages during the school break.

“Firstly, the MCO means you remain where you are. Secondly, now is not the best time to go back because we are afraid those going back might have been to Covid-19 infected places,” he said.

He said complying with the order by staying put at home is for the health importance of oneself and the family members.

“If everyone follows the rules, it will reduce the spread of the virus.

“We have noticed that where the MCO is observed, there are some successful cases of containing the spread of the virus.

“Some cities are under lockdown, and we hope we don’t have to reach that point if everyone cooperates and abides by the law,” he said.

Yesterday Senior Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob announced that the army will help with police during the MCO to ensure the movement will be enforced better this Sunday.
