WITH the increasing number of new hotels and “homestays”, visitors to Sarawak face no problem in finding accommodations in both its cities and major towns and tourist destinations in the remote areas.

“Homestays”, usually as accommodations in the rural villages and remote region, have sprouted around the cities and towns too. They are usually houses whose owners have been granted permits to reinovate, furnish and convert into “homestays”.

“The benefit of staying in a “homestay” is that the guests are free to be themselves, to do their own things and wear whatever they want, just like in their own home. They can do their own laundry, cook their meals instead of eating out, thus more economical.

In fact, it is a “home-away-from-home” in the city! As such, the “homestays” can also be used as venues for wedding ceremonies and receptions,” said T. Chai, of Natol homestay@hotelstyle, who currently has 4 houses converted into “homestays”, located in strategic areas of Kuching.

“For foreigners, it provides an opportunity to experience our way of life and getting to know the neighbours around them.”

Chai’s “homestays” are conveniently located near ‘kopitiams’ and grocery stores, and within walking distance from supermarkets where the guests can shop for their needs.

One innovative idea of Chai is that his 4 “homestays” have their own identity and theme, namely: “London”, “Paris”, “LA” and “Kuching” and are decorated and furnished accordingly. “This is for the guests to feel what it is like living in a typical home in the respective cities,” explained Chai.

“London”, at Foochow Road No.1, has 15 rooms, “Paris”, at Satria Jaya, BDC, 10, “LA”, at Bayur Bukit, Tabuan Jaya has 7 and “Kuching” at Eden Height, Airport Road, 6. Each room has its own shower and air con unit and is furnished with brand new beddings and furniture.
The 4 “homestays” are operated hotel-style, with towels, toiletries and housekeeping service provided, but also provided with washing machines, fridges and cooking utensils for the convenience of the guests.

Chai said that the rooms are charged “per room per night”, but for guests who want the whole place to themselves, they can negotiate a “contract rate.”

The rooms can also be used for transits (e.g between flights). “Now and until the last day of the year, we are having room promotion: If you stay 4 nights, we charge you for 3 nights only.”, said Chai.

To complement his “homestays” Chai provides “pick-up service” to and fro airport and bus terminal. He also provides car-rental service (including or excluding drivers) and Tour Guides to show guests around Kuching.
