Woman passenger dies, four others hurt in crash

The driver of the Perodua Axia car and passengers helping each other after the car they were travelling in plunged into a ravine at KM31, Sri Aman-Kuching Road last Sunday.

SRI AMAN: A woman died at Sri Aman Hospital after she was invovled in an accident at KM31, Sri Aman-Kuching Road last Sunday. Sri Aman District Police chief, DSP Haji Othman Sulaiman said the deceased has been identified as Norhayati binti Abdullah @ Timoi Nopit, 58, of Kampung Bijuray Krokong, Bau.

“Prior to the accident, Norhayati was with three other passengers travelling in a Perodua Axia car from Sibu heading to Kuching driver by Helena Lai, 33.

“It is beleived that Helena lost control of the car and skidded before the car plunged into a ravine,” Othman said. The impact of the fall caused the driver and four passengers to be seriously injured and were taken to Sri Aman Hosptal in an amulance for further treatment. However, Norhayati succumbed to her injuries at Sri Aman Hospital at 11.45 pm on Sunday.

“We have taken the blood sample of the driver for analysis to determine whether she was under the influence of alcohol or drugs,” Othman said, adding that the case is being investigated under Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act,1987. The three injured passengers are Lai Chun Hie, 55,Caroline Lai, 27 and a three-year-old girl.
