An empty bar – this is the current situation facing the nightspots.

KUCHING: Nightclubs remains as the only business premises listed in the ‘negative list’ as Malaysia begins its transition into the endemic phase and reopening of borders starting April 1.

In response to this issue, Deputy State Secretary (Rural Transformation) Datuk Ik Pahon Joyik, who is also Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) deputy chairman said he took note of the statement issued by Industries Unite.

Previously, trade group coalition Industries Unite had issued a statement urging the government to allow the operation of nightclubs with strict health and safety measures in mind.

“SDMC will meet soon to discuss and finalise the standard operating procedure (SOP) as we move into the endemic phase,” Ik Pahon said when contacted by New Sarawak Tribune.

“Will provide more insights on this issue hopefully within this week,” he added.

A worker at a local bar in a commercial centre here, Siew, said a lax restriction would help the nightlife scenes a lot.

“Obviously there’s a drop in the number of customers, with the restriction and limitation of customers entering the premises.

“However, should bars and clubs be allowed to operate fully but with strict SOP, I do not see a problem in that.

“But even if nightspots aren’t allowed to be operational come April 1, I would have to agree because Covid-19 cases are still on the rise,” she added.
