KUCHING: The Fisheries Development Authority of Malaysia (LKIM) landing wharf at Tanjung Bako (PPLTB) provides modern and comprehensive equipment for fishermen in the area.

According to LKIM chairman, Muhammad Faiz Fadzil the construction of the first phase of PPLTB started on August 1, 2018 and provided various facilities for fishermen.

“Among the components provided are commercial boat jetty, traditional boat jetty and
diesel.

“The components developed are modern and able to drive the transformation of the nation’s fishery industry to grow rapidly in line with the modernsation of the country,” he at a press conference held at PPLTB,
yesterday.

Faiz also hoped that the PPLTB will become a modern centre to move the fishing industry forward.

“The centre is still new and our targets are still relatively low. Based on last year (2018) statistics, the total amount of fish landed at PPLTB was 3,948 metric tons which is equivalent to over RM10 million,” he said.

He added that the department has plans to upgrade facilities at PPLTB in the second phase to enable it to develop and progress further.

“I understand that there are problems at PPLTB such as ice facilities and so on. In the fishing industry, the source of good and quality ice is important to keep the fish caught fresh.

“It is a challenge for LIKM here to solve the issues which would be included in the second phase of the department plan costing RM30 million.

“We hope to be able to provide an ice factory, a fish processing plant and a fishing boat repair workshop. However, thus far, we are still waiting for the fund from the federal
government,” said Faiz.

In phase 1, 123 fishing boats were registered with LKIM.
