MIRI: The Miri City Council (MCC) has extended its ‘No Plastic Bag’ initiative to every day starting yesterday.

According to MCC councillor Karambir Singh, 49 retail outlets have opted to take part in the programme which was previously carried out from Fridays to Sundays.

He added that the initiative is part of the council’s effort to reduce the usage of plastic bags.

“But if they (retail outlets) want to sell plastic bags to customers, we are not against it as there are no laws on banning the usage of plastic bags,” he said when met yesterday after a meet-the-people session held at Boulevard Hypermarket at Jalan Miri-Pujut here.

“We (MCC) have no issues on the matter, it is up to the customers to pay for the plastic bags. We will not receive any proceeds from the sale,” he said.

He also lauded the commitment showed by the 49 participating retail outlets.
