KOTA BHARU: The National Union of Teaching Profession (NUTP) has urged all schools to speed up the implementation of the Code of Ethics for Parents or Guardians to ensure the teachers’ welfare is protected.

NUTP president Aminuddin Awang said the schools’ response to implementing the code was still not encouraging although the Education Ministry had issued a circular on Dec 19 last year.

“We hope all schools will speed up the implementation of the code as a control measure to avoid any unwanted incident from happening to teachers and, thus, increase their productivity,” he told reporters after launching the code of ethics at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Penambang, here today.

Also present were Kelantan NUTP chairman Johari Ahmed and school principal Omar Ab Rahman.

The code of ethics was drafted in 2017, with reference to existing codes in the United States, United Kingdom and India.

There are 15 guidelines in the code of ethics for parents or guardians to adhere to as well as eight behaviours they should be avoided.

Among them are that parents must get permission from school administrators first if they have any problems relating to their children; parents are not allowed to take helmets or any banned items which could cause harm; and parents must be fully responsible in ensuring their children’s attendance.

Aminuddin said they had so far launched the code of ethics in 14 schools nationwide since the beginning of the year, adding that NUTP would collaborate with state education departments to ensure at least about 10,000 schools in the country implemented it by the end of this year.

He also advised parents to verify any information first in matters involving their children’s problems in schools as well as to give their cooperation to teachers. – Bernama
