OCM confident Tokyo Olympics will proceed as scheduled

KUALA LUMPUR: The Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) are confident that the Tokyo Olympic Games (Tokyo 2020) will be held as scheduled from July 23 to Aug 8 this year.

OCM president Tan Sri Mohamad Norza Zakaria said he was informed on the readiness and meticulous preparation undertaken by the Japanese government via a joint conference call with his Japanese counterpart Yamashita Yasuhiro and International Olympic Committee (IOC) president Thomas Bach yesterday.

Mohamad Norza said during the call, they were also informed that key delivery partners had worked to ensure the staging of safe and secure games not only for the athletes and officials but also the local community.

“We stand in solidarity with the IOC and our Japanese counterpart and look forward to participating at the Games,” he said in a statement today.

Mohamad Norza said OCM are also in discussion with the IOC regarding the vaccination of the national contingent to the Games.

He expressed his gratitude to the IOC for their willingness to support OCM in their engagement with the Malaysian government on the matter.

“Locally, we will continue our discussions with the Health Ministry, Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry, the National Sports Council and the National Sports Institute to ensure our athletes and officials will be able to focus on their training and preparation in the safest environment,” he said. – Bernama
