One death, 276 new cases

KUCHING: A 66-year-old senior citizen in Sibu is the latest Covid-19 fatality case in Sarawak, bringing the total number of deaths to 97.

Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) said the victim, identified as Case 12,907, went to seek treatment at Sibu Hospital after having breathing difficulty.

“The case had fever and cough since the past few weeks and his rT-PCR test result was found positive on March 16.

“His health condition deteriorated and he was pronounced dead on March 19.

“The case had comorbidities of end-stage kidney disease, diabetes and high blood pressure,” it said in a daily Covid-19 statement here on Sunday (March 21).

At the same time, Sarawak recorded a total of 276 Covid-19 positive cases, bringing the state’s tally to 14,250.

Of the total, 68 were reported in Sibu, Bintulu (66), Miri (50), Julau (25), Kuching (19), Meradong (16), Serian (10), Betong and Kapit — five each, Sri Aman and Subis — three each, Song (two), while Samarahan, Sarikei, Sebauh and Tanjung Manis recorded one case each.

“From the total cases, 222 cases comprised of individuals who had been instructed to undergo quarantine at designated quarantine centres.

“In short, 177 cases were individuals screened after having contact to positive cases, 42 were individuals linked to active clusters, 42 were individuals screened in health facilities, 12 from screening of symptomatic individuals, two Import A cases involving individuals who came from Brunei and Pakistan, and one Import B case involving an individual who had returned from other state,” it elaborated.

SDMC also said 197 patients had recovered and discharged from hospitals on Sunday — 57 from Sibu Hospital, 47 from Kapit Low-Risk Treatment Centre (PKRC), 24 from Sarawak General Hospital (SGH), 21 from Bintulu Hospital, 19 from Betong PKRC, 14 from Miri Hospital, 12 from Sarikei Hospital, two from Mukah PKRC and one from Serian PKRC.

“This brings the total number of recovered and discharged cases to 11,388 or 79.92 percent of total Covid-19 cases in Sarawak,” it said.

SDMC also said that there were 2,717 individuals still undergoing treatment at hospital isolation wards in the state — 695 in Sibu Hospital and PKRC, Miri Hospital and PKRC (540), Bintulu Hospital and PKRC (376), SGH and Kuching PKRC (265), Semuja Immigration Depo PKRC in Serian (237), Kapit Hospital and PKRC (182), Sarikei Hospital and PKRC (169), Betong Hospital and PKRC (123), Sri Aman Hospital and PKRC (56), Serian PKRC (55), Mukah PKRC (13), Limbang Hospital (four) and Lawas PKRC (two).

A total of 276 new person-under-investigation (PUI) cases were reported on Sunday with none awaiting laboratory results.
