SIBU: Local hawkers and shoppers at Sibu Central Market responded well to a donation drive here today (Nov 1).

Chairman of Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Dudong branch Wong Ching Yong and SUPP deputy president (II) Datuk Chieng Buong Toon led a team of party members to the market for the purpose.

Wong, who is also deputy chairman of Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC), said the idea was to get each person to donate just one ringgit.

He said the donation would be for helping Citizen Middle School to rebuild its hostel which a fire destroyed last Oct 23.

The donation drive started at 7.30am and ended by 9am during which RM 5,100.99 was raised.

As at 5pm on Oct 31, a total of RM133,599.99 was raised, said Wong, adding that together with today’s amount raised at the central market, the grand total so far was RM138,700.98.

He appealed to the public to continue donating as the cost of rebuilding the hostel is estimated to be about RM2 million.
