Online gambling: Woman gets five months

KUCHING: A foreign woman was sentenced to five months in prison by the Magistrate’s Court here Monday (Jan 30) for involvement in online gambling activities.

Magistrate Siti Farah Ibrahim sentenced Anju Lestari, 31, from Selakau, Indonesia after she pleaded guilty.

The court ordered her to serve the prison sentence effective from the date of her arrest on Jan 17.

According to the charge sheet, she committed the act at a restaurant in Kota Sentosa, at about 8.20 pm, that day.

Police who raided the restaurant on suspicion it was hosting online gambling seized two folding tables, plastic chairs (eight units), televisions (two units), smart phones (five units), a modem unit, and cash totaling RM240.

In addition, the Indonesian woman who worked as a caretaker of the premises was also arrested with three other customers.

Meanwhile, in the Sessions Court, the woman was also sentenced to four months in prison for entering the country without a valid travel permit.

Judge Afidah Abdul Rahman ordered her to serve a prison sentence effective from the date of her arrest on Jan 17.

The prosecution of the case was handled by Deputy Public Prosecutor Mohamad Aiman Mutallib Mohamad Shariff and Prosecuting Officer Inspector Nur Syafiqa Nyaie Ilin while the accused was not represented by a lawyer.
